Businessman and political stakeholder, Dumebi Ifeanyichukwu, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, describing the move as a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework ahead of future elections.
Speaking during a media interaction on Thursday, Ifeanyichukwu said many residents and political actors in Imo State believe the President’s push for electoral reform is driven by a genuine desire to improve governance and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
“We want the President to know that Imo people are fully behind him,” he said. “The ongoing conversation around the Electoral Act should not be reduced to politics alone. What matters most is building a stronger and more credible democratic system.”
His comments come amid heightened national debate over the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act. While supporters argue that the reforms are necessary to address operational gaps observed during previous election cycles, critics have raised concerns about transparency and possible political implications.
Ifeanyichukwu also referenced the views recently expressed by nightlife entrepreneur and social commentator Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, noting that his involvement reflects a growing interest among young Nigerians in governance-related discussions.
“Voices like Chief Priest’s show that Nigerians, especially young people, are becoming more engaged with policies that shape the country’s future,” he said. “We should encourage constructive dialogue rather than division.”
He further urged lawmakers at the National Assembly to ensure that any amendment to the Electoral Act prioritises national stability, inclusiveness, and fairness.
“The President’s ultimate goal is to improve Nigeria’s electoral system, and he is on the right track,” he added. “I recall that protests were held weeks ago calling for the approval of electronic transmission of results, which has now been addressed.
“This clearly shows that President Tinubu is a leader who listens and has the best interest of all Nigerians at heart.”
