The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted reports linking it to attacks on members of Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State.
National Vice Chairman of LP in the South East, Mr. Innocent Okeke, had accused “powers that be in Enugu” for attacks on party members in the state. No fewer than three meetings of LP had been attacked in Enugu in the last two months with properties destroyed.
Reacting to the allegation at the weekend, PDP, through its state Publicity Secretary, Jude Ugwu, dismissed the reports as misleading, stressing they are aimed at currying unnecessary sympathy of the gullible public.
PDP said: “The misleading, false and provocative report was done with intent to smear the reputation of the Enugu chapter of PDP.
“Silence would have been golden, but we need to deconstruct the strange garb in which these repeated lies have been cloaked, lest the public be deceived. Such unfounded and outlandish claims are, at best, misleading and childish. It is an affront to the people’s collective sensibilities in the face of the nation’s multifaceted security concerns
“The country is in dire straits; bleeding profusely under the weight and proliferation of restiveness, unbridled violence, incessant kidnappings, senseless killings and economic quagmire.
“Unfortunately, the South East, which is clearly under siege, has had more than its fair share from ruthless, gun-toting, marauding non-state actors, who are killing without boundaries. Despite the spirited efforts and unwavering commitment of leadership of PDP in Enugu, the state cannot be said to have been completely insulated from this menacing threat confronting the South East.
“There is no doubt that leadership of the party in the state has, through some proactive, robust and measured interventions, defended the frontiers of the state; receiving many accolades on security in the process. Safe for pockets of security breaches in which the PDP had been chiefly targeted with various degrees of casualties, Enugu has not only remained the safest state for Ndigbo, but has evolved into the most peaceful state for all law abiding citizens of the country.”
