ERA, Ogoni Monarch fault HYPREP on cleanup
The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoE) and Head, Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, HRM King Godwin Gininwa, have blamed the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) for the crisis in the cleanup project.
They, however, appealed to Ogoni people to allow the agency to implement the cleanup exercise. They attributed the delay and crisis to a lack of openness in implementing the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, which has caused distrust and rejection of the agency by the people in some areas.
Giniwa spoke when Programme Manager of ERA, Mike Karikpo led some environmentalists to cleanup sites in Ogoni yesterday, saying there was no need for a crisis. Karikpo said a lack of transparency and non-inclusiveness by HYPREP triggered the crisis and the rejection it has been facing over the cleanup exercise.
