The European Union (EU) and medical experts have vouched for the health safety of genetically modified (GM) crops, saying they are safe for human consumption.

The EU, in comprehensive research to ascertain the health safety of GM maize, observed that no carcinogenicity was found in the tested crop, adding that the rats fed with them did not develop any clinical abnormalities.

A clinical nutritionist with the National Hospital, Mrs. Mmiriukwu Chima, said all safety concerns had been addressed before their release

To the President of the National Biotechnology and Bio-safety Consortium (NBBC), Prof. Celestine Agboru, PBR cowpea does not contain “any harmful element that is dangerous to human health.”
