Experts urge NSIB staff to prioritize selfcare, wellness

Health and wellness experts have called on staff of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to take proactive steps in prioritizing selfcare, mental health, and nutrition for improved overall wellbeing.

This call was made during a one-day training program hosted at the Bureau’s Ultra-Modern Auditorium in Abuja.

The event, themed “Selfcare as a Foundation for Health and Wellness,” was organized by D’Bio Wellness and Selfcare in collaboration with Lusong QSE Ltd.

The training featured presentations by a team of facilitators led by convener of the D’Bio Wellness and Selfcare Summit and a Fellow of Pharmacy Society of Nigeria (FPSN), Dr. Monica Eimunjeze.

The convener equipped the staff with essential insights on how selfcare practices, mental health awareness, and proper nutrition contribute significantly to personal and workplace wellbeing.

Eimunjeze also emphasied on the need for individuals to adopt intentional and consistent selfcare routines, guided by the seven pillars of selfcare as recommended by the International Selfcare Foundation. These include health literacy, mental wellbeing, physical activity, healthy eating, risk avoidance, good hygiene, and appropriate use of health products and services.

She concluded by commending NSIB for embracing staff wellbeing as a strategic priority. “We are delighted to partner with NSIB to promote a culture of wellness and self-care within the organization,” she stated.

A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Olajumoke Koyejo highlighted data from a joint survey by the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), which estimated that 20–30 percent of Nigeria’s population is affected by mental health disorders. She explained that symptoms often begin subtly such as sleep disturbances and irritability but can progress to more serious conditions that impair daily functioning.

Koyejo also outlined preventive strategies within workplace settings, such as managing workload, clarifying job roles, improving communication, and recognizing employee efforts.

A registered Dietitian-Nutritionist Ms. Obianuju Chukuwuemeka in her presentation, reinforced the connection between diet and mental resilience, stressing the importance of balanced nutrition as a pillar of preventive healthcare.

Speaking at the event on behalf of the Director General/CEO of NSIB, Mr. Alex Badeh Jr., the General Manager of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mrs. Maryam Shekoni, reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to staff welfare. She expressed appreciation to the facilitators for conducting what she described as a timely and enlightening program
