Anambra State had been identified as a potential flood risk. The downpour caused extensive damage to undeveloped plots in the area, leading to blocked drainage systems.
Most displaced families sought refuge with relatives, friends, or associates, while some wealthier residents relocated to hotels. One affected resident, speaking through tears, shared her ordeal with The Guardian: “We’ve had to leave our home and move into a hotel. Everything we own is underwater, and we are effectively homeless. We are appealing to the Anambra State government to help us because we are suffering.”
She described her visit to assess the damage as follows: “This morning (yesterday), I went back to our house after neighbours helped evacuate me and my children last night.”
You wouldn’t believe the devastation; our entire property is damaged, and so much is missing.”
“I don’t know where to begin. We’re not the only ones affected; there are about five other families staying in the same hotel as my children and me. Even as we speak, it looks like it will rain again, and I am terrified for my family. We are pleading with Governor Soludo to help us.”
