The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially handed over 24 newly completed housing units to the University of Ilesa, marking a major step toward strengthening staff welfare and institutional development.
The handing-over ceremony, held at the University, attracted top officials of the Ministry, University Management, and other stakeholders who gathered to witness what was described as a milestone intervention by the Federal Government.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, described the occasion as a significant milestone that reflects the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to improving access to decent and affordable housing across Nigeria.
Represented by the Director of Public Building of the Ministry, Pemi Temitope, Dangiwa noted that the project aligns with the government’s broader agenda of addressing the housing needs of citizens and key institutions nationwide.
The Minister stated that housing remains a fundamental component of national development and social well-being, stressing that no society can achieve sustainable progress without providing functional shelter for its people.
According to him, the Ministry has continued to champion strategic initiatives aimed at ensuring that Nigerians, including public servants and those working in critical institutions, have access to safe and comfortable accommodation.
He emphasized that the Federal Government recognises universities as centres of knowledge, innovation, and national transformation, noting that for such institutions to effectively deliver on their mandate, the welfare of staff must be treated as a priority.
He explained that stability, productivity, and institutional growth are directly linked to staff well-being, which makes housing support a critical factor in achieving educational excellence.
Dangiwa further noted that it was in recognition of this reality that the provision of the 24 housing units to the University of Ilesa became imperative. He described the project as a targeted effort to strengthen the capacity of the young University by providing a supportive environment that enables academic and administrative staff to carry out their responsibilities efficiently.
The Minister commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilesa, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu, for his visionary leadership and for keying into the initiative, describing his commitment as instrumental to the realisation of the event.
He also praised all stakeholders who contributed to making the housing project a reality, noting that collaboration remains key to achieving national development goals.
Dangiwa reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to continue partnering with educational institutions across the country to ensure that infrastructure and welfare support systems are strengthened. He said the Federal Government remains determined to create sustainable solutions that will improve the living standards of Nigerians while also boosting productivity in public institutions.
Responding on behalf of the University, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Olufemi Asaolu, described the event as historic and a major breakthrough in the growth of the institution.
He expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Honourable Minister for what he described as a timely intervention that will significantly enhance staff welfare.
Prof. Asaolu assured that the housing units, which are located on University land, would be put to good use and properly managed to serve the purpose for which they were provided.
He noted that the development would not only improve the working conditions of staff but also strengthen the University’s attractiveness to highly qualified personnel.
The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the support of the Federal Government and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to sustaining a culture of excellence, growth, and responsible resource management. He described the housing project as a symbol of confidence in the future of the University of Ilesa and its role in national development.
