Nigeria and the Muslim World League are set to convene an international security conference in Abuja on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, with peaceful coexistence, national unity and security expected to dominate discussions.

The conference, holding at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, will bring together religious leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to examine the link between peace, security and socio-economic development.

It is also expected to promote dialogue and mutual understanding among Muslims, Christians and people of other faiths as part of broader efforts to strengthen national cohesion.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday during the inauguration of the Muslim World League Mosque in Abuja by the Secretary General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Scholars, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa.

Idris, who received Sheikh Al-Issa at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and accompanied him to the mosque inauguration, said the visit reflected the strong relationship between Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and the wider international community.

He said the conference was particularly significant as Nigeria continues to strengthen its security architecture while implementing reforms and investments aimed at accelerating socio-economic development.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to creating an environment of peace and religious harmony, which he described as essential to the country’s stability and prosperity.

“The President is determined to ensure peace and tranquillity not just in Nigeria, but around the world. This is a clear demonstration of the path that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking,” Idris said.

The minister stressed that Nigeria’s position as Africa’s most populous country placed a responsibility on the country to contribute to peace and stability across the continent.

He noted that a peaceful and secure Nigeria would have positive implications for West Africa and the wider African continent, making the international gathering an opportunity to deepen cooperation on security and peaceful coexistence.

Idris said the conference would enable religious leaders and other stakeholders to share experiences and develop practical approaches to strengthening peace, security and mutual understanding.

He also commended the Muslim World League, Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), the Saudi Arabian Government and other stakeholders for facilitating Sheikh Al-Issa’s visit and the establishment of the mosque.

The minister further acknowledged the Muslim World League secretary general’s efforts to promote dialogue and understanding among different faith communities.

Speaking earlier, Sheikh Al-Issa commended Tinubu’s efforts to promote peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims, saying stability in Nigeria would contribute to peace across West Africa and beyond.

The Muslim World League chief said the central purpose of his visit was to promote peace and peaceful coexistence, expressing confidence that the Abuja conference would provide an important platform for advancing dialogue and harmony.

He also inaugurated a newly constructed mosque in Gauda, Abuja, while expressing appreciation to individuals and organisations that contributed to its establishment.

The international security conference is expected to bring together religious leaders, government officials and other stakeholders to deliberate on security challenges and the role of dialogue and interfaith cooperation in addressing them.

Among dignitaries who attended the mosque inauguration were Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto; Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate; Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, representing Sokoto North Senatorial District; Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central Senatorial District; and Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima.
