FG pledges intervention on Ibadan ecological crisis

The Oyo State Government

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the ecological challenges facing Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, particularly the recurring flooding that has claimed lives and destroyed property.

The assurance was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, on Thursday in Abuja, during a visit by the Olubadan of Ibadan, Adewolu Ladoja, who led a high-powered delegation from Oyo State to his office.

Welcoming the monarch and his entourage, Senator Akume called on prominent Nigerians, especially alumni of the University of Ibadan, to give back to the ancient city that shaped their lives.

“We will do everything within our capacity to support the development of Ibadan, especially in resolving the ecological challenges that have long plagued the city and resulted in flooding,” Akume said.

He described the Olubadan’s visit as a demonstration of leadership and sacrifice, noting that the monarch’s personal intervention underscored the urgency of the situation.

“As a king, you occupy a crucial position, and this visit shows your commitment to seeking urgent solutions to the ecological crisis in your domain,” he added.

Akume also praised Ibadan as a peaceful and accommodating city, describing it as a microcosm of Nigeria and acknowledging its role in shaping many national leaders.

“I have known you since 1992, not only as a distinguished Nigerian but as a former senator and successful businessman determined to uplift his people. We appreciate your love for humanity and pray that you continue to provide impactful leadership to your people,” the SGF said.

Earlier, Oba Ladoja expressed deep concern over persistent flooding and other environmental challenges affecting Ibadan, lamenting the loss of lives, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities across several parts of the city.

The Olubadan appealed to the Federal Government to intervene urgently through relevant agencies to provide lasting solutions to the ecological problems. While commending ongoing federal efforts nationwide, he stressed that Ibadan deserved special attention due to its size, population, and historical significance.

He assured the SGF of the traditional institution’s full cooperation in mobilising communities to ensure the success of any intervention aimed at restoring environmental safety and stability.

“I am here because Ibadan has a serious ecological problem, and I know Senator George Akume can help resolve it, judging by his past records, particularly the Ogunpa Channelisation Project,” the monarch said.

“Till today, flooding is no longer an issue in Ogunpa.”

He noted that flooding was not limited to Ogunpa, explaining that several densely populated areas inhabited by ordinary citizens were even more severely affected but received less media attention.

“That is why I have submitted a letter identifying these areas and appealing to the Federal Government to come to our aid,” he said.

Describing the SGF as the engine room of government, Oba Ladoja recalled his long-standing relationship with Akume and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence in the SGF’s capacity to facilitate federal intervention through the Ecological Fund.

“My goal is to make Ibadan better than I met it. I know I can lean on him, just as he once did in the past,” the monarch added.

The Olubadan was accompanied by Senators AbdulFatai Buhari and Sharafadeen Alli, as well as Alhaji (Chief) Ademola Alli, Prince Ade Adekanbi, Hon. Nureni, and other notable personalities.
