The federal government yesterday, announced plans to achieve five Million Metric Tonnes (5,000,000 MT) of domestic, commercial and industrial LPG utilisation in 10 years.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, explained that specifically, for household cooking, the present administration is targeting a 40 percent adoption rate (13.8m households) in five years and 73 percent adoption in 10 years (33.3m households). Osinbajo at the formal commissioning of Techno oil LPG cylinder manufacturing plant said the federal government has also demonstrated its commitment to the sub sector by establishing an Inter-Ministerial Committee and a multi-stakeholder national coordinating body, the National LPG Expansion Programme. He said since the present administration took charge in 2015, one of the issues identified was the abysmally low domestic utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria, despite Nigeria’s domestic LPG production of 3 million metric tonnes (MT) per annum. He assured that the Federal Government would continue to actively support every effort to promote the use of LPG in Nigeria, as well as create and maintain an effective and catalytic regulatory environment.

Earlier, the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Techno Oil Limited, Nkechi Obi, said in line with the objectives of the LPG expansion plan of the federal government, it has established itself to provide leadership across the industry’s critical value chain, stating that its 12,000 metric tonnes LPG terminal construction has reached 90 per cent and would be commissioned by November this year.

She added that the company has deployed over 50 units of LPG skid-mounted stations and haulage trucks to eradicate the age-long dilemma of accessibility.
