Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kauran Namoda Local Council of Zamfara State was on Monday night gutted by fire. The cause of the inferno, which reportedly occurred around 11p.m. is yet to be ascertained at press time.

Confirming the incident, yesterday, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Festus Okoye, stated that no casualty was reported. Okoye said critical materials such Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and machines for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise stored in fireproof cabinets were saved.

“However, the building was extensively damaged. A number of fixed and movable office furniture were destroyed, despite the efforts of the Zamfara State Fire Service to contain the inferno.

“The attention of the Nigeria police has been drawn to the incident. Together with the Fire Service, they have commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and to advise the commission properly,” Okoye added.
