Fire guts oldest Kurmi market in Kano

About 70 permanent and temporary shops were destroyed, yesterday, by fire in Kano’s popular Kurmi market. Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the State Fire service (SFS), Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said they received an emergency call at about 5:23a.m. from one Aliyu A Alkasim over the outbreak of the fire.

About 70 permanent and temporary shops were destroyed, yesterday, by fire in Kano’s popular Kurmi market.  Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the State Fire service (SFS), Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said they received an emergency call at about 5:23a.m. from one Aliyu A Alkasim over the outbreak of the fire.  
   
He said: “Today being Wednesday, March 1, 2023, Our control room received an emergency call at about 05:23a.m. from one Aliyu A. Alkasim, who reported an outbreak of fire at Kurmi Market in Kano Municipal Area.
 
“Immediately after receiving the report, the service mobilised its men to the scene, but the cause of the  fire was not yet ascertained.  
 
“We mobilised our men from various fire stations within the metropolitan area.

“On arrival at the scene of the incident at about 05:27a.m., the service was able to successfully save several shops within the market area and no injury was recorded and no lives were lost.  
 
“I will use this medium to draw the attention of the general public to switch off all electrical appliances and disconnect from the source when not in use and to desist from careless use of naked fire throughout the market premises.”
