Fenchurch Group has commenced rebuilding of the 26-megawatt Akute Independent Power Plant to provide dedicated electricity to major Lagos waterworks, with the first 10MW expected within four months.

The project, being developed by Fenchurch Power Limited through Aggregate Utilities Limited, the group’s special purpose vehicle, is being delivered under a concession agreement with the Lagos State Government.

The remaining 16MW is expected to be delivered within 12 months, while surplus power will be exported to the Ikeja Electric network. The project is expected to support the operation of the Akute intake, as well as the Iju and Adiyan waterworks, whose equipment depends heavily on electricity for water production.

Speaking during a stakeholder visit to the Oregun fabrication yard of Jubaili Bros, where equipment for the project was being prepared, Group Chief Executive Officer of Fenchurch Group, Olufemi Bakare, said the project was intended to keep the water infrastructure running reliably.

”Water needs power. Lagos State has invested significantly in its water infrastructure, and our mandate is to keep it running reliably round the clock,” he said.

Head of Production, Lagos Water Corporation, Agiri Mustafa, said reliable electricity was crucial to water production because most of the corporation’s equipment was power-driven.

He said the corporation would be the primary off-taker of the electricity when the equipment was installed. ‎”Power is a very crucial aspect of water production generally. Most of our equipment is power-driven,” he said.
