A youth-focused environmental organisation, EcoSmart Club, has unveiled plans to mobilise secondary school students across Nigeria for a week-long climate action campaign aimed at translating environmental awareness into practical community interventions.

The initiative, tagged National School Climate Action Week, is scheduled to hold from June 1 to 6, 2026, in commemoration of World Environment Day. Participating schools are expected to undertake projects centred on recycling, waste management, and sustainability advocacy within their communities.

The programme is designed to move climate education beyond classroom discussions into practical action, with students documenting their activities through photographs and short videos. These will be curated into daily “School Spotlights” showcasing youth-driven environmental solutions.

Founder of EcoSmart Club, Hannah Omokhaye, said the initiative was conceived to transform climate engagement from mere awareness to hands-on action capable of influencing behaviour at the community level.

According to her, the intervention is also aimed at nurturing environmentally conscious citizens and future leaders through sustained exposure to real-life environmental challenges.

Project Manager, Temidayo Arewa, explained that secondary school students were deliberately targeted because of their formative stage of development, where values and habits are still being shaped.

She noted that early involvement in climate action could foster long-term behavioural change capable of extending beyond schools into wider society.

“The aim is to spark interest in climate responsibility early, so it becomes a lifelong practice with ripple effects across society,” she said.

Under the programme framework, participating schools will implement eco-friendly projects tailored to their local environments, with submissions reviewed and showcased as part of the initiative’s storytelling component.
Organisers said the storytelling approach is intended to amplify student voices while building a repository of locally driven climate solutions that can be replicated in schools nationwide.

At the end of the exercise, EcoSmart Club is expected to publish a report detailing participation levels, outcomes, and lessons learned, while issuing certificates to participating schools and providing continued visibility for selected projects.

The organisers added that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to integrate climate action into everyday school experiences and position students as active contributors to environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
