Four seminarians die in bus crash at Obudu Ranch Resort, Cross River

Four seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Church died in a bus crash at the Obudu Ranch Resort Bottom Hill in Cross River State on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

The seminarians, part of a group led by a Reverend Father, had completed a tour of the resort and were heading back when the bus’s brake reportedly failed, causing it to plunge into a valley in Ikwete village, located in Obanlikwu Local Government Area.

The crash claimed the lives of four seminarians, while nine others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital in Obudu.

In a statement, Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

“It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the tragic accident that occurred at Ikwette community by Obudu Ranch Resort Bottom Hill,” he said. “The unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of four lives and injuries to nine others. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time.”

The statement further mentioned that the crash involved a vehicle carrying 13 individuals, and initial reports indicate that brake failure may have contributed to the accident.

Emergency services at the resort, including personnel from the Nigerian Army, responded swiftly to assist the victims.

The governor’s office emphasized the importance of safety at the resort, saying, “Safety is our utmost priority in the Ranch Resort and beyond, and we will review the safety measures in place for every visitor. We urge all visitors to prioritize safety, including the roadworthiness of their vehicles, and to adhere to all guidelines while coming to our beautiful attractions and leaving the confines of the Resort.”
