DETERMINED to address the continuous reckless driving habit and negative attitude of truck and trailer drivers on Nigerian Roads, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested and prosecuted no fewer than 537 offenders in the first phase of a Special Patrol Operation code named “Operation Scorpion” on Lagos- Ibadan expressway.

The raid covered 139 kilometers from Ojota, Ikorodu road interchange in Lagos State to Iwo Road, in Ibadan, Oyo State from July 27 to July 31, 2015.

It, however, resulted in the arrest and prosecution of 537 trucks and trailer drivers during the period.

The Zonal Commanding Officer Federal Road Safety Corps Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Lagos, Assistant Corps Marshal Nseobong Akpabio, while reviewing the one- week operations with his corridor commanders in Lagos, pointed out that the first phase of the Operation was designed to focus on the drivers of trucks and trailers on the ever busy Lagos – Ibadan expressway.

Akpabio stated that it has been observed over time that the driving habit of these set of drivers on Nigerian roads has been a thing of concern.

“The recent deaths, pain and sufferings brought on Nigerians resulting from havocs caused by falling tankers laden with fuel and unsecured containers carrying trucks have become an embarrassment to the nation, hence the need to address it squarely,” he said.

Akpabio pointed out that “the 537 trucks and trailer drivers were apprehended based on the designed objectives of “Operation Scorpion” special patrol which was to optimally deploy the human and material resources available to the Corps to ensure compliance to traffic rules by the drivers who have been dubbed by many Nigerians as “killers on the wheel” were all prosecuted at various mobile courts in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States respectively.”

“They were arrested for violation of various traffic offences especially the operations-focused offences of trucks moving with unsecured containers, lane indiscipline, rickety vehicles, overloading, driving with worn-out tyres and driver’s license violation among others.”

“Personnel of the Corps drawn from all FRSC formations along the corridor from Lagos Sector Command headquarters to Ojota Unit Command, Lagos; Mowe, Sagamu, Ogere and Ogunmakin Unit Commands all in Ogun State and finally FRSC operatives from Oyo State coordinated by the Sector Commander Oyo with operation base on Oluyoye Unit Command. The Corps Marshal & Chief Executive Boboye Oyeyemi who led the National Headquarters team, also participated in the exercise from Lagos to Ibadan,” he said.

The Assistant Corps Marshal informed his Corridor Commanders that with experience of the recent past week operations, the Corps Marshal has approved the extension of the Special Operation to other routes nationwide as the corps is determined to continue with high level of enforcement for compliance to all traffic rules and regulations by all road users while plying the nation’s highways.
