Fubara commences N30.4b road project, targets early completion
The Rivers State Government has commenced the reconstruction of the 19.7km Buguma-Abalama-Tema-Degema-Abonema Road that connects nine communities in the Kalabari Kingdom.
The N30.4 billion project was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and is expected to be completed within 15 months. The project is anticipated to significantly boost economic activities and improve the lives of residents in Asari-Toru, Degema, and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas.
At the project’s flag-off ceremony, Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed unwavering confidence in Julius Berger’s ability to deliver a high-quality project on schedule. He highlighted the state government’s commitment, noting that 30 per cent (N9.1 billion) of the project cost has already been paid, even amidst financial challenges.
“We know Julius Berger very well, and they have never disappointed us,” he stated. The governor urged the communities to cooperate fully with Julius Berger to ensure the project’s timely completion.
Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr Peer Lubasch, who echoed the Governor’s sentiments, emphasised the company’s shared commitment to the progress and development of Rivers State.
“We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support and the privilege to contribute to your administration’s ambitious developmental initiatives,” Lubasch said. He added that the project represents another milestone in their partnership.
Lubasch assured the governor and the people of Rivers State that the project would meet the high standards for which Julius Berger is known. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odein Ajumogobia SAN, who performed the flag-off, noted that the project will address significant security concerns associated with the dilapidated road, as highlighted by Ajumogobia emphasised the historical significance of Abonema as a bustling seaport and the crucial role that improved transportation plays in development.
