Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasised the importance of ethical leadership, strong institutions, and electoral integrity in addressing Nigeria’s sociopolitical challenges.

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasised the importance of ethical leadership, strong institutions, and electoral integrity in addressing Nigeria’s sociopolitical challenges.
Delivering the keynote address at the Freedom Online 6th Annual Lecture yesterday, tagged, ‘Nigeria’s socio-political challenges: Whose fault, leaders or the led?’ Fubara stressed that leaders must prioritise transparency, accountability, and inclusivity to build trust with citizens.
According to Fubara, leaders must lead by example, demonstrating integrity and accountability to inspire others to adopt a similar stance. He advocated for stronger institutions, allowing independent agencies to function without political interference, and promoting civic education to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities.
The governor also noted the need for improving electoral integrity and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
He stated that political parties must prioritise candidates with integrity and competence and that citizens must demand openness and accountability in governance.
Fubara noted that leaders must inspire change and elevate citizens’ standard of living, particularly the vulnerable majority. He said: “The debate over whether Nigeria’s socio-political challenges stem from the leaders or the led, is complex. In reality, both share responsibility. Leaders must be accountable and work for the people.
They must implement patriotic policies, and strengthen institutions, while citizens must actively participate in governance. They must become more politically conscious, demand accountability, and vote based on competence rather than sentiment.”
On his part, the Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Adewole Adebayo, stated that the country’s problems are surmountable, calling for leaders that can reconcile the conflict in the identity.
Also, former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, noted that the problem of the country stems from leadership, noting that it is time the country believes in its ability.
He said: “The solution is that we have to prioritise ourselves. If I have my way, our forex will only be reserved for things we can’t produce. How do we explain that we import toothpicks, matches, and the like? These are things we can produce. Most of the culture we imbibed has damaged our economy.”
