The Rivers State House of Assembly members on Wednesday, 20 December 2023, withdrew the notice of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The notice of withdrawal was stated in a letter signed by 26 of the members and read by their Speaker, Martins Amaewhule after they resumed sitting at the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt.

According to Amaewhule, the withdrawal was in line with the conflict resolution intervention instituted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Rivers State has been embroiled in a crisis due to a misunderstanding between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara.

As part of moves to end the rift, President Tinubu, in consultation with the former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili met with the warring parties and a truce was brokered at the Aso Villa in Abuja.

The rift between Wike and Fubara split lawmakers in the House with 27 of them defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The feud brought the emergence of parallel sittings and impeachment plot against the governor.

It also led to the demolition of the Assembly complex, and resignations of commissioners who are pro-Wike in Fubara’s cabinet.
