Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo has promised to establish a University of Science and Technology in the state before the end of his tenure.

Dankwambo said this yesterday, while receiving the chairman of the Governing Council of Federal University, Kashere, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and his team, at the Government House.

He said the decision to establish the new university was inspired by the need to develop the right manpower that would deploy research and technology in resolving the various challenges confronting the state. “We are thinking of establishing a second University of Science and Technology.

We have a natural location and we will do our best to ensure that before the end of this tenure, we establish one. “University is about research, and we want to find out what we are sitting on and why we don’t have water one kilometre below the earth surface in Gombe,” he said.

Meanwhile, Salem University, a private University‎ situated in Lokoja, has been granted full operating licence by the National Universities Commission (NUC). In a statement yesterday signed by the Head, Public Relations Unit of the institution, Mr. Ocholi Ikan, the school said that the accreditation would boost the institution’s vision of being a centre of Academic excellence, innovation and research.

According to the statement, the Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Julius Okogie was quoted to have said that the school was awarded the licence because of “its adequate staff strength in relation to student ratio and the standard learning facilities which support all the programmes offered by the University.”
