Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has flagged off the distribution of 54,600 bags of rice to support less-privileged Muslims during the forthcoming Ramadan fast.
Unveiling the initiative ahead of the commencement of the fasting period next week, Governor Yusuf said the annual intervention was designed to ease the economic burden on residents and ensure food security throughout the holy month.
He explained that the distribution would cover all 44 local government areas of the state, as well as other selected beneficiaries. According to him, a total of 91 trucks of rice—equivalent to 54,600 bags of 50kg each—will be distributed across the state.
Of the total number, 44 trucks will be allocated directly to the 44 local government areas, while the remaining 47 trucks will be distributed to selected groups and individuals to assist them during the fasting period.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the governor announced the establishment of monitoring committees at both the state and local government levels to supervise the supply, distribution and delivery of the rice.
“It is my singular honour and privilege to be with you today for this annual flag-off of Ramadan support distribution for the year 1447 AH,” Yusuf said.
“At the state level, the committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, with the Ministry of Agriculture serving as the coordinating body,” he added.
Governor Yusuf also called on other stakeholders, including the Federal Government and well-meaning individuals, to complement the state’s efforts in alleviating the economic challenges faced by citizens during Ramadan.
In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, commended the governor for his compassion and commitment to the welfare of the masses, noting that the initiative would significantly reduce anxiety among residents during the holy month.
Similarly, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, thanked the governor for involving local governments in the distribution exercise and assured that the food items would be judiciously distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
