Government eager to develop country’s steel industry – Bwari
Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, Abubakar Bawa Bwari has explained that with reserve estimate of iron ore standing at 2,452 million tonnes, it is incumbent on Nigeria to develop a vibrant steel industry.
He said that government was focusing on developing the upstream mining sector, as over 95 per cent of the current steel production was from scrap metal, and the country is endowed with iron deposits.
The Minister said: “We have a total of 43 steel plants in the country, and fabricating outfits in value chain, which 90 percent operate in the downstream sector.“Ajaokuta project was designed to produce 1.3 million tones of liquid steel per annum with inbuilt facilities to expand to 2.6 million tones in the second phase, and 5.2 million in final phase.”
