Motorists and commuters travelling to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones have lamented grueling gridlock, which has lasted for four days, following a road crash involving four trucks along Minna-Suleja, Maje-Jere and Abuja-Kaduna highways.
The Guardian learnt that after the incident, articulated vehicles blocked the highway from Maje in Suleja to Izom in Gurara Local Council of Niger State.
It was further gathered that the traffic extended to Diko junction and Jere in Kaduna State through Tafa, which also impacted free flow of traffic along Kaduna-Abuja expressway.
Stranded passengers and motorists were seen on both lanes of the roads, lamenting that they have already spent days of hardships on the road, including hunger.
Some traders, who captilalised on the situation, used motorcycles to sell bread for the stranded travellers. Two of the affected passengers who identify themselves as Musa Yahuza and Hajiya Salmat Ibn Kasim said they were forced to board motorcycles from Jere in Kaduna State to Lambata in Gurara local council of Niger at the cost of N7,500.
Also, passengers from Suleja who could also afford to spend more days on the road took motorcycles from Maje to Lambata for between N3,000, and N4,000.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Niger State Police Command were yet to issue an official statement to that effect.
However, an official of the FRSC advised motorists plying the Suleja-Minna road to take an alternative route through Lambata to Gwagwalada or other alternatives to avoid being caught up in the traffic.
