Group charges lawmakers to reconvene over insecurity emergency

Matawalle seeks more U.S. support
A group, Congress of Good Governance for National Unity (COGGNU) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to declare a “cold national security emergency for the sake of God and humanity, waiving aside partisan politics and other selfish ethnocentric or religious sentiments, often blurring courage in taking such decisions.”

In a statement by its National Chairman, Abiodun Fanoro, the group noted “the state of insecurity and cold-blooded murder of hapless and defenseless innocent.

Nigerians in the country had reached an alarming and terrifying crescendo that President Tinubu should declare a cold national emergency where the entire citizenry shall be mobilised and put on red alert for defence.”

The body faulted the extension of resumption by members of the National Assembly, describing the decision as lust for enjoyment, while Nigerians are being subjected to genocidal war and horrendous invasions.

ALSO, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has called on the United States government to deepen its support in tackling insecurity in Nigeria through enhanced intelligence sharing, counterterrorism assistance, and military capacity building.

He appealed during a strategic meeting in Abuja with Major General Garrick Harmon, Director for Strategy, Engagement, and Programs at the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), who is currently on his first official visit to the country.

A statement by his Director of Information and Public Relations, Patience Ituke, quoted the minister as highlighting the importance of strengthening Nigeria-U.S. defence cooperation and urging for more assistance in critical areas such as technical training, logistics, and equipment support.

“Nigeria is dedicated to promoting regional peace and security. However, we cannot achieve this alone,” Matawalle stated.
