Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called for the installation of wheelchair lifts at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called for the installation of wheelchair lifts at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

The group, who praised President Muhammadu Buhari for the rehabilitation of the airport, lamented non-provision of disability sensitive infrastructure at the facility.

In a statement by its Executive Director, Mr. David Anyaele, the group said non-inclusion of disability sensitive infrastructure at the airport, which was reopened recently, was contrary to the provisions of the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018 also known as the National Disability Act.

Anyaele reminded government of Section 14(2) of the Act providing that “all airports shall make available for the conveyance of persons with disabilities who need presentable and functional assistive and protective devices to and from the airport”.

He said they were not happy that more than 90 per cent of airports in Nigeria are not accessible to citizens with disabilities.

The group regretted that the Enugu State Government had yet to adopt the National Disability Act, saying the situation had exposed people with disabilities in the state to discrimination, exclusion and neglect.

Anyaele, who called for lifts designed for passengers with disabilities in all the airports in the country, urged Buhari to ensure implementation of the National Disability Act.
