Domestic-Violence

A group, Amazing Amazon Initiative, in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs, will hold a conference to educate the female folks.

It is a support group for women from all walks of life living in different countries worldwide.

The conference, aimed at addressing the increasing cases of domestic violence in the society, some of which go unreported, will hold on Saturday, September 24, 2016 in the former federal capital with the theme, ‘Lagos and The Woman’.

According to the founder of the group and convener of the conference, Mercy Makinde: “The spate of domestic violence reported (as thousands would go unreported) since the beginning of the year has been alarming. There has been a prevalence of spousal abuse and violence resulting in some women being badly maimed while others lost their lives. Everyday, we wake up to terrifying headlines that leave you not only gob-smacked, but also completely distraught and agitated.

“At the conference, we would hear from women who are survivors of domestic abuse and how they rose above their situation. Issues affecting women who are resident in Lagos that would make them well-rounded individuals, help them live a fulfilled life and compete favorably with their contemporaries in other parts of the world would also be discussed.”

The initiative is dedicated to the empowerment, enhancement, uplifting, personal growth and development while educating women on domestic abuse, its signs, causes and help available. The ministry will educate women on the provisions of the law in Lagos State for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Speakers expected at the event are Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lola Akande who will deliver the keynote address; Executive Director, Project Alert, Mrs. Josephine Effah; Founder/Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Thistle Group, Mrs. Ini Onuk, and Nigeria’s foremost actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, among other notable women leaders and captains of industry.
