Leadership Initiative for Youths Empowerment (LIFE), a non-government organisation has called for the abolition of female genital mutilation, to promote the right of the girl-child in the country.

Speaking at a one-day community sensitisation programme, held at Grandmates School Ago Place, Okota Lagos, titled: Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunities For Children In Africa by 2030, to mark the International Day of the African Child, the Programme Officer, Joseph Afam said the gesture was to promote society where young people live healthy and responsible lives, free from the ravages of diseases and discrimination, with social equity for all.

Afam said: “The event is part of our activities aimed at raising awareness about female genital mutilation as human rights violation among community members and young people in Isolo and Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Areas and also to increase the support provided by 200 community leaders in these areas to end female genital mutilation by October 2017.”
