Group seeks release of Uzodimma’s ex-aide from detention
A rights group, Save Imo, has tasked Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, on the release of his former aide and Special Adviser (Special Duties), Chinasa Nwaneri.
The group, in a statement issued by its convener, Ebubeagu Ekenulo, yesterday, stressed the need for the aide to be taken to court rather than face endless detention.
Nwaneri was arrested by the police in Owerri about 20 days ago alongside others over alleged fraudulent activities and harassment of people.
He had been Uzodimma’s closest aide before he (Uzodimma) become governor.
The group urged the governor to note that Nwaneri’s alleged offence is bailable
It said: “Your former aide and political son, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, was arrested for certain alleged offence(s) pertaining to land deals and building of plaza, and has been in detention for upward of ten days or more without bail.
“Save Imo is constrained to appeal to His Excellency to order the immediate release of Nze Chinasa Nwaneri on administrative bail. Nwaneri, under the law, is entitled to bail after 48 hours of arrest and detention.
“Nwaneri was not arrested for any capital offence or national security issues. He should be charged to court, instead of keeping him in detention indefinitely.”
The group added: “Almost everybody around His Excellency and Nze Chinasa Nwaneri are afraid to get involved and seek his bail, insinuating that you ordered his arrest. Please, allow the Rule of Law to play out in this matter. Your kind consideration will be appreciated.”
