Igbo youths move to honour Abia returning officer

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has been asked to terminate the services of a Computer Science lecturer, Dr. Nnaemeka Ogbene, allegedly involved in election manipulation scandal in Enugu State.

The Executive Director, Odera Foundation, Oluwakemi Roland, who made the call in a statement, yesterday, in Enugu, said the university authorities must act quickly to preserve integrity of the academia, as well as protect vulnerable students.

Roland, who said her organisation is scandalised by what she described as “flagrant abuse of electoral processes” during the recently concluded governorship election in the state, wondered how a university lecturer would be allegedly involve in the manipulation of results with such impunity, and still be allowed to return to teach students.

In another development, Igbo youths under the aegis of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) have nominated Prof. Nnenna Oti for ‘Hero of Democracy’ award.

Oti was the Returning Officer in the just concluded governorship election in Abia State.

In a statement signed by the group’s President General, Goodluck Ibem, and Publicity Secretary, Okey Nwaoru, the group said the award was as a result of the role she played in the election.

It said: “We came to this conclusion, because of her outstanding performance, resilience and determination to speak and defend the truth. She is a true example of what a true Christian should be. She is a role model for anyone who aspires to be great in life.

“For sure, she has proven beyond reasonable doubt that we still have women of integrity left in our nation, who will not do the wrong thing no matter the amount of money involved.”

The statement noted that Prof. Oti rejected billions of naira offered her by an interested political party to upturn the will of the people, who voted massively for Dr. Alex Otti as their governor.
