A non-governmental organisation, the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State to work with Governor Monday Okpebholo for the progress of the state.
The call followed last week’s judgement of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which upheld Okpebholo’s election.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja the Country Director of the coalition, Mr. John Mayaki, stressed the need for collective efforts in governance, describing development as a shared responsibility.
He said the tribunal’s judgement was fair and impartial, and would allow the governor to fully concentrate on the business of governance.
Mayaki acknowledged the PDP’s right to appeal the verdict but expressed concern over the interest shown by the United States Mission, which said it would monitor the appeal process.
“I don’t believe foreign missions have any business in our judiciary or local politics. There are limits,” he said, urging the PDP not to be swayed by international commentary on Nigeria’s internal affairs.
He noted that courts rule based on evidence, not sentiments, and warned against undermining the judiciary.
“We shouldn’t attack the judiciary when outcomes don’t favour us. If we destroy our institutions, we’ll have nothing to fall back on,” he added.
