The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy security personnel to communities in Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Benue State to address ongoing attacks by gunmen.

This resolution followed a motion presented by Ojema Ojotu, the representative of the constituency, during Wednesday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Recent times have seen renewed violence in Apa/Agatu, marked by clashes between herders and farmers. Presenting the motion, Ojotu recounted the tragic events of October 1, 2024, stating, “Residents of Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency experienced Armageddon as invaders killed the IDP camp’s remnants, who were initially displaced but returned to sew crops ahead of the dry season.

“There was another attack on the federal constituency, particularly on Egwuma, Olagbani, Okwutanobe, and Ogwule Ankpa, and communities in Agatu Local Government Area, in which lives and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.”

Ojotu lamented the persistent violence, noting that despite repeated calls for government intervention, the killings continue unabated, leaving survivors displaced and homeless.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House observed a minute of silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the recent attacks.

The resolution included an appeal to the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Air Force, and other relevant security agencies to urgently move into the affected communities to conduct surveillance, prevent further attacks, and carry out clearance operations.

Furthermore, the House urged the military to establish a large military base in the area to restore peace and prevent future violence. It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to establish befitting IDP camps in Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency.
