Gunmen kill Civil Defence officer one month after becoming a father

Gunmen suspected to be cult members on Wednesday shot dead an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti State, Sunday Afolabi. A source said Afolabi’s assailants shot him in the heart along Afao Road, Ado Ekiti around 3:30p.m.

The state police command said Afolabi was killed by suspected cult boys. His body was deposited at the morgue by some policemen, who visited the scene after the killing. NSCDC spokesman, Tolu Afolabi, confirmed the killing yesterday.

NSCDC spokesman, Tolu Afolabi, confirmed the killing yesterday. He said investigation has begun into the incident in a bid to unmask the killers.

The late Afolabi, who served in the Intelligence and Investigation Unit of Ekiti NSCDC, was described as a gentle officer and a thorough investigator. He is survived by a wife and a one-month-old baby.

The slain officer, who was said to be 35 years of age, joined the security agency in 2010. He hailed from Ayegbaju-Ekiti in Oye Local Council of the state.The incident yesterday cast a thick pall of grief on the NSCDC Ekiti Command headquarters, where officers and men gathered in groups discussing the incident in hushed tones.

NSCDC spokesman said: “Unknown gunmen have killed an officer of NSCDC, Sunday Afolabi, an Assistant Superintendent Corps 1 (ASC1), along Afao Road, Ado Ekiti at about 1530 on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. The officer was shot in the heart and his body has been deposited at the mortuary while investigation continues.”

Ekiti State Police Command, Alberto Adeyemi, said: “I have just spoken with OC-SARS and he said the cult boys killed the person along Afao Road, where the NSCDC office is located. We sympathise with our sister security agency on the killing of the officer. Investigation has commenced into the incident,” he said.
