Halt imposition of leaderships on councils, NULGE urges Tinubu
Ruling parties winning all elections at the local council level is a threat to the third tier of government, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has warned.
Rising from its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting yesterday in Abuja, NULGE President, Olatunji Ambali, urged President Bola Tinubu to halt the win-at-all-cost syndrome.
He said: “That NEC-in-Session wishes to appreciate President Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to the local government which the union has been clamouring for. This will bring development to the grassroots. NEC-in-Session admonishes the Federal Government to immediately take steps towards ensuring the conduct of free, fair and credible elections across all local governments in Nigeria to avoid the imposition of undemocratic leadership such as caretaker committees, sole administrators and others on the local governments by the state governments. All states should, therefore, conduct local government elections before October 11, 2024.”
The union called on the Implementation Committee set up by the Federal Government to hasten the process of submission of the framework for the implementation of local government autonomy. It faulted the non-implementation of the new national minimum wage three months after the bill was signed into law.
“The NEC-in-Session urges the President of Nigeria to implement the new national minimum wage as earlier approved to commence not later than October 2024 to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerian workers”.
