National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has lamented the dearth of nurses and midwives in hospitals, saying it was responsible for the high maternal mortality rate in the country.

The association called on the federal and state governments to re-tool their employment policy and ensure massive recruitment of professional nurses into the workforce.

Its third vice president, Mrs. Mercy Azonwu, made the appeal yesterday at a medical outreach programme in Dutse-Alhaji community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) organised by the association to mark the International Day of Midwives and Nurses.
