Unknown gunmen, yesterday, invaded Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma’s ancestral home in Omuma in Oru East Local Council of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Orlando Ikeokwu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), in his media platform, said two Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officials and a police sergeant were killed.
Orlando wrote: “ The hoodlums attacked the governor’s house by throwing in petrol bomb. Two cars were burnt. They were successfully repelled, and none of the buildings was set ablaze. Unfortunately, one unarmed NSCDC personnel was killed in the process. The hoodlums, while escaping, also killed a Police Sergeant and another NSCDC personnel, both in their private vehicles at Mgbidi Junction.”
Efforts to talk to Ikeokwu on phone were not successful.
Also, the state government, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the bandits came in a convoy of about 15 vehicles, including a tipper, and arrived at the premises about 9.00 a. m. with dangerous weapons.
The government directed relevant security agencies to expedite action on investigation and apprehend the perpetrators.
Also condemning the attack, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, raised the alarm over the alleged plot to destabilise the Southeast ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Describing the attack as “shocking and condemnable,” the group said the development had gone into history as one that would be remembered in a long while.
It stated that an attack on the governor’s residence was an indication that those behind it were not joking.
The National Publicity Secretary, Chief Alex Chiedozie Ogbonnia said: “It is shocking and condemnable. It is a bad thing. It is an abomination. We are calling for thorough investigations on the matter.
“It is unfortunate and disheartening that the violence is taking place in Igboland at the moment. It is a calculated attempt by a group to destabilise the Southeast.
“When you look at the level of sophistication of the crimes, you will agree that it requires a certain level of training on the part of those behind it. The wave of crimes is not one that can be carried out by those who are not sufficiently trained…”
