The House of Representatives yesterday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conclude pending elections in Rivers State.

To ensure that the commission complies with the directive, the House has mandated its Committees on Legislative Compliance and Electoral Matters to liaise with the electoral body to get confirmed dates for the polls.

Debating the motion moved by the House Minority Leader Leo Ogor and five others, members expressed dissatisfaction that rerun senatorial elections were yet to be conducted in Rivers State since last year. This, they said was in defiance of the Court of Appeal ruling December last year, which ordered that the elections be held within 60 days.

They said rather than obey the court order, INEC only conducted four out of the 12 federal and few states constituencies’ elections on March 19 this year, thereby reducing the number of its representatives in the National Assembly. This INEC action, the lawmakers said contravened Sections 48, 49 and 91 of the 1999 Constitution.
