Lagos State Task Force

Members of Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre, (HRDAC), have expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged maltreatment of Lagosians by the state task force.

Speaking during a protest in front of Lagos State House of Assembly in Lagos yesterday, the members said, ëWe have witnessed many occasions where some innocent citizens were arrested and arraigned with state lawyers influencing the suspect to plead guilty whether they committed any offence or not, and the innocent and scared suspect always plead same and thereafter they shall be asked to pay a huge amount to a bank account.

In a statement jointly signed by HRDAC Vice President and Chairman BOT, Comrade Isa Nakawu and Comrade Innocent Agbo respectively, the members further stated that some people are detained and abandoned in prison, with nobody to take up their case.

One of the victims narrated his ordeal saying, ëTwo months ago, I was arrested at my shop on Allen junction, Ikeja for no reason and was asked to bring N10, 000 to bail myself. Last month, I was at home and suddenly I saw people running. They said police are raiding houses. My friend and I went inside our room.

They came but we refused to open and they forced the door open and took us to Task Force Office and then court. There was no judgement in the court but I was taken to a prison in Badagry. It was my brother that later paid N30, 000 to bail me,í he said.
