The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticised President Bola Tinubu for not personally congratulating Amanda Azubuike, the first Nigerian-born female military officer to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army.
HURIWA’s comments follow an opinion poll indicating public sentiment that if Azubuike were Yoruba or a male, the President would have recognized her achievements.
In a statement by the National Coordinator, HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubike, the group expressed disappointment that only the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, sent a congratulatory message.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the significance of Azubuike’s historic promotion, urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from her success.
Azubuike, 57, was born in London to Nigerian and Zimbabwean parents and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1989.

She has had a distinguished 30-year military career, serving in various strategic roles within the U.S. Army. Her promotion reflects her dedication and exceptional service, paving the way for future generations of Nigerian-Americans.
HURIWA called on President Tinubu to publicly congratulate Azubuike to demonstrate his commitment to unity and inclusiveness, criticizing his perceived tribal bias in appointments to national positions.
