Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said that he could quit music today and still be financially secure for life.
He made the statement while speaking to Nigerian music executive Bankuli in a video shared online after his performance in Toronto during the ongoing 5Alive Tour.
According to the singer, his love for music is stronger than any money he could make from it.
“It’s not for the money. I got billions of dollars waiting for me if I don’t work a day in my life today,” Davido said.
He also revealed that no matter the size of the crowd, whether 10 or 19,000 people, he gives his best because he genuinely loves performing.
“I love it. I love my job,” he said, adding that he’s thankful to everyone who has supported his career, including people he may not even remember.
The “Unavailable” hitmaker acknowledged that the journey hasn’t been easy, but credited his mental strength and hard work.
“There’s individual strength and mental ability that goes into this type of work, especially with a lot of odds against me. So it’s like, f**k I got to do it,” he said.
Davido, 32, also took a moment to reflect on his early days in music. He recalled freestyling as a teenager in Atlanta for Don Jazzy and D’banj.
“When Jazzy was leaving, he looked back at me like, ‘This boy has something’,” he said.
He further revealed that he once drove his father’s Rolls Royce to buy McDonald’s just so he could freestyle in it.
Despite the fame and fortune, Davido said the best is yet to come.
“Most people get their biggest songs at the beginning of their career. I was getting tired ni**. Ni** said no we ain’t going nowhere — and more to come,” he said.
With sold-out shows across the world, Davido said he believes his next milestone will be a concert for 60,000 people.
He remains one of Nigeria’s most influential musicians, with multiple global hits and a massive fan base.
