A British national, Andrew Wynne, declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government, has expressed his readiness to speak with Nigerian authorities.
Wynne, speaking on Monday in a ChannelsTv interview, dismissed claims that he is on the run and insisted that he is willing to engage with the police.
“I am not aware that I am a fugitive; I am not aware that I am running away from the law,” Wynne said in an interview with Channels Television. “I have been visiting Nigeria for 25 years. I have had a bookshop at the NLC offices right at the centre of Abuja for seven years, and all that time, the security forces have shown no interest in me.”
Wynne further stated, “I only have one nationality, and the name on my passport is Andrew Wynne with a nickname. I am more than happy to talk with the police, have a discussion on WhatsApp or Zoom, or meet with officials from the Nigerian High Commission in London. If they want to start a conversation, then I think that is more than adequate.”
Wynne’s Nigerian wife also spoke to Channels Television, asserting that her husband is being wrongly accused.
She argued that the reason for his ordeal is unrelated to the allegation of plotting to overthrow the government.
She accused a Nigerian man, Mr. Olumide, of owing her husband and attempting to have him expelled from the country to avoid repaying his debt.
“We have been together for nine years, with eight years of friendship before we finally got married last year. My husband is falsely accused; he has never been a terrorist. He is being accused because Mr. Olumide is owing him and is not ready to pay,” she stated.
She added that the case is currently in court and accused Mr. Olumide of trying to intimidate her husband to force him out of the country.
“He is in the UK because he had to leave when his visa expired. If not for all these issues, he would have been back by the end of September,” she explained.
Earlier on Monday, Nigeria Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi accused Wynne of building a network of sleeper cells to create chaos and overthrow the government.
He confirmed that the Nigeria Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into Wynne’s activities and those of other subversive elements allegedly plotting to undermine the democratically elected government in Nigeria through unconstitutional means and orchestrated violence across the country.
