As part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of Imo State, the Myke and Joy Empowerment Foundation has launched an initiative aimed at empowering more than 1,500 indigent persons annually, including widows, orphans and students, over an initial 10-year period.
The scheme was unveiled at a press conference in Owerri at the weekend by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Comrade Myke Onyekachi, who said beneficiaries would be selected from three local government areas within the Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency.
Onyekachi explained that the initiative was conceived to complement the achievements of Governor Hope Uzodimma, particularly in the areas of human capital development, education and infrastructure.
“Today, through the Myke and Joy Empowerment Foundation, I formally announce the launch of the Hope Uzodimma Legacy Empowerment Scheme,” he said.
“This initiative is designed to honour exemplary leadership, celebrate Imo State’s golden jubilee, and create lasting opportunities for our people.”
He described the programme as a deliberate investment in grassroots development rather than a token empowerment effort.
“This is not political tokenism or a seasonal intervention. The scheme is structured to be sustainable, measurable, and impactful. It will be an annual programme, expanding in scope and reach each year,” Onyekachi stated.
According to him, the foundation will establish a monitoring and mentorship framework to track beneficiaries, provide ongoing support, and link them to training, financing and market opportunities, with the aim of driving long-term economic transformation.
Speaking on the significance of Imo State’s golden jubilee, Onyekachi urged residents to reflect on the future as much as the past.
“As we celebrate Imo at 50, let us also celebrate the possibilities ahead. Our people are known for ingenuity, resilience and enterprise. What we have often lacked is opportunity and leadership to unlock that potential,” he said.
He expressed optimism that with committed leadership and active citizen participation, the next 50 years of Imo State would surpass the last.
“The future can be more glorious if we commit to building our communities, serving selflessly, and creating opportunities that uplift everyone,” Onyekachi added.
