Imo State Police Command said it would stop at nothing in ensuring that those behind the gruesome murder of two traditional rulers in the state are apprehended and made to face the law.

Suspected hoodlums had on Tuesday invaded Njaba council headquarters of the state during a meeting of stakeholders and opened fire on them.

The incident left two prominent traditional leaders in the area dead while many others sustained injuries and are in critical conditions.

The deceased are HRH Eze S. C Osunwa of Ihebinowere Autonomous Community and HRH Eze A. E Durueburuo of Okwudor Autonomous Community.

The spokesman for Imo State Police Command, Michael Abattam, in a statement yesterday, said the police were not informed about the meeting, hence could not provide adequate security for the attendants.

The statement party reads: “On 20/10/2021about 1500 hours, following information received that hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ ESN members are attacking the venue, where the transitional chairman of Njaba Local Government Area was holding a meeting with some transitional rulers.

“The Commissioner of Police,  Rabiu Hussaini, immediately, dispatched tactical teams comprising the Special forces, Rapid Response Squad and Anti-kidnapping Squad to the scene, on their arrival, they were informed by the police patrol teams, that the hoodlums fled into the bush on sighting them.

“At the scene it was revealed that the transitional chairman of Njaba Local Government Area,  Hon. Emeka Ihenacho was having a meeting with 15 transitional rulers of Njaba communities without informing the police or other security agencies.  While the meeting was in progress, armed bandits suspected to be IPOB/ ESN members came and started shooting at them indiscriminately after which they ran into the bush.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Rabiu Hussaini, while condoling with the families of those,  who lost their lives, enjoined all and sundry to be law abiding and go about their lawful businesses, assuring Imolites of the command’s commitment to arrest and bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime.”
