The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the re-run and supplementary polls in Imo North Senatorial election, Chief Benjamin Uwajumogu, has been declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), beating his closest rivalry and former occupant of the seat, Chief Athan Achonu, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Announcing the results last Thursday night, the Returning Officer (RO) in the elections, Prof Arinze Agbogu, disclosed that Uwajumogu, who is the immediate past Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, scored 56,072, above Achonu’s 43,815.
The commission also declared the APC candidates in Oru East and Isiala Mbano State Constituencies winners.
APC last Saturday won the Owerri West State Constituency in the re-run election.
Achonu, who spent about six months in the Senate, had his victory voided by the Court of Appeal last year, following the suit filed by the Accord Party candidate, Mrs. Rita Ibemere, over the exclusion of her party’s logo by the INEC.
The appellate court subsequently ordered a re-run within 90 days.
Last February, the polls were shifted following violent protest by some youths, who demanded rescheduling, alleging discrepancies.
Last Saturday election was declared inconclusive because Uwajumogu led Achonu to the tune of 8,777, after about 13,000 did not vote or had their votes cancelled.
Isiala Mbano and Oru East were also declared inconclusive because of recorded violence.
