INEC confirms 30 parties for Ondo guber poll

INEC-boxThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 30 political parties to participate in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Olusegun Agbaje disclosed this in Akure yesterday at a press conference. He assured that the election would be hitch-free and devoid of irregularities.

Agbaje said the commission had embarked on voters’ education and mobilisation to ensure the success of the election. He added that the campaigns were designed to prevent voters’ apathy and appealed to the citizens of the state to shun violence before, during and after the election.

The REC, who commended political parties and politicians for the peaceful conduct of their primaries, also appealed to them to be cautious of inflammatory comments, which are capable of igniting political tension during campaigns.

He said all the political parties participating in the governorship election had concluded their primaries and there was no more chance for any fresh party primaries.“The commission appreciates the level of tolerance, compliance with approved standards of political campaigns and decorum during the last general election, the current political campaigns should record a significant improvement,” he stated.

According to him, factors, which are responsible for inconclusive elections such as violence, non-usage of smart card readers and over-voting would be avoided.

The INEC REC, speaking on electoral crimes said: “I wish to draw your attention to the fact that the commission has stepped up action to prosecute electoral offenders as part of efforts towards creating a peaceful environment for the conduct of elections. “It is pertinent to state that electoral offenders must be punished to serve as deterrent to others.”
