INEC officer shot dead, wife abducted in Ebonyi

A staff of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Emmanuel Igwe, was shot dead at Ivo Local Council axis of Ebonyi State on Sunday.

The wife of the late Igwe was abducted by the attackers, while another man was also killed. The Assistant Electoral Officer in Afikpo North was said to have encountered the assailants as he returned from Abia State. A source told The Guardian that people who had been working on their farms heard the gunshots and ran for safety.

“When we came out from our hiding place, we discovered that two persons had been shot dead and a woman abducted,” the source said. Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.

She said: “The command received a complaint that two persons were killed by unknown gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, at Ishiagu Ivo Local Council of the state. One was killed inside his car, while the other was killed in his farm. The command has not got full details of the incident but it has begun full investigation into the attacks.”
