Nteje community in Oyi Local Council of Anambra State has concluded plans to begin registration of non-indigenes living in the community, alleging that some of them are linked to insecurity in the area.

Nteje community in Oyi Local Council of Anambra State has concluded plans to begin registration of non-indigenes living in the community, alleging that some of them are linked to insecurity in the area.

The community said it has banned youth activities, as a measure to check restiveness and insecurity within the area.

The President General of the community, Mr. Chidiebele Obika, made the revelation at weekend during a meeting with groups, including Nteje Development Union (NDU), women’s groups and custodians of the community’s culture and traditions.

Obika, who was recently made the caretaker chairman, announced that the community has stopped indiscriminate sale of land, arguing that monies realised from such sales was the cause of laziness among its youths.

While lamenting the spate of insecurity in Nteje, he said they gathered to take steps on how to correct some issues that have been causing it.

He recalled that soldiers recently invaded the community on the pretext of looking for criminals, called unknown gunmen, and about six youths were allegedly killed.

Obika said: “One thing I am sure of is that our youths are not members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“We have restive youths, and are taking steps to tame them; that is why we have resolved that all youth activities in the community have been abolished, and all youth leadership disbanded.”

According to him, it is in the guise of being youth leaders that some have become terror in the community, and that must stop.

He added: “When we are ready to hold elections for youth groups, we would announce it; not some people arrogating leadership to themselves.”

“The indiscriminate sales of land have caused laziness in our youths. This has caused illegal sale of our lands.”
