Intervene in seeking Onwuka’s whereabouts, Zionists tell South East governors, leaders

The Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) yesterday asked the South-East Governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to intervene in seeking the whereabouts of their leader, Benjamin Onwuka, eight days after security men took him away in Enugu.

Onwuka was last seen on August 20, when he led members of his group after their failed attempt to hoist Biafra flags and declare its independence at Enugu State Government House.

Those arrested with him were released in the evening of the same day by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) while Onwuka’s whereabouts have remained unknown, as his members are yet to establish contact with him.

Expressing his concern over the development, the group’s Deputy Leader, Mazi Ambrose Ugwu, said: “It is surprising that an Igbo man should be kept incommunicado for such a period of time without a word from the governors of the region and executives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“But this can only happen in Igbo land where governors and leaders of Ohanaeze don’t care about their subjects.

“On our part, we have never carried arms, neither have we threatened violence against anyone, yet we are facing inhuman treatment from security forces, with the backing of weak political leaders we have in this part of the world.

“This is how Uwazurike was harassed out of the struggle; same fate befell Nnamdi Kanu. Now, the last man standing, Onwuka is being treated in a most cruel manner.”

He called on the United States (U.S.) and other allies such as Amnesty International (AI) and other international civil society organisations (CSOs) to speak out against the injustice against the helpless people of Biafra, whose sin is their demand for freedom in a non-violent way.

Ugwu asked the governors and Ohanaeze leaders to demand Onwuka’s whereabouts from the DSS, stressing that he did not fly away from their custody.
