A prominent Katsina-based Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim Masussuka, has emphasised the need for a reorientation in preaching to promote peace and unity among Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking at the “Celebration of Peacekeepers Day” event in Katsina, he stressed that a change in public orientation could lead to peace, reducing the financial burden of security on the government.
Sheikh Masussuka, who has been a vocal advocate for peace and understanding, said clerics can reorient the compatriots to embrace peace and unity via their preaching and challenge hate speeches and extremist ideologies.
According to him, this approach can help foster a culture of tolerance and respect among people of different faiths.
He emphasised the Quran’s message of peace and freedom of religion.
In his speech, Brigadier General Babatunde Omopariola, representing the Nigerian Army 17 Brigade Headquarters, reechoed Sheikh Masussuka’s stance, saying, “Preventing crises is always better than reacting to them after.”
The event, themed “Peace Begins With Me,” brought together stakeholders from the military, police, civil defence, and traditional leaders to discuss security challenges in the North and brainstorm solutions.
In recognition of his efforts to promote interfaith harmony, Sheikh Masussuka was presented with a Peace Ambassador award by the Network for Good Governance and Transparency (NGGT).
