The law firm of Deji Adeyanju & Partners has warned against what it described as a sustained media trial of its client, Dr John Abebe, and his hospital, Joje Abebe Hospital Limited, over an ongoing IVF-related case before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The lawyers alleged that recent media reports on the matter were misleading and appeared aimed at damaging the reputation of Abebe and his hospital while prejudicing public opinion against them.

The lawyers disputed reports suggesting that a fresh criminal charge had been filed against Abebe and two others, insisting that no fresh charge had been instituted against their client.

According to the firm, the Attorney-General of the Federation took over prosecution of the existing Charge No. CR/005/26 from the police several months ago. It added that although an amended charge had been filed, it had not been moved before the court.

The lawyers expressed concern that the reports could undermine the judicial process and prejudice public perception of the pending proceedings, stressing that Abebe and the other defendants remain entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence.

“We emphasise that allegations contained in a criminal charge remain allegations until determined by a competent court on the basis of admissible evidence,” the firm said.

It urged journalists and media organisations reporting the case to verify facts, exercise professionalism and accurately reflect the procedural status of the proceedings.

The lawyers warned that continued inaccurate reporting could amount to an attempt to secure a conviction in the “court of public opinion” rather than through the judicial process.
