Member of the House of Representatives representing Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Esosa Iyawe, has declared his intention to seek a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting his legislative achievements and constituency interventions as proof of performance.
Iyawe made the declaration at the APC Secretariat in Oredo over the weekend, where he addressed party faithful and supporters who gathered in large numbers to endorse his bid.
The lawmaker, an engineer, said his entry into the APC was driven by a commitment to strengthen the party and deliver effective representation.
“I came to APC to grow it, not to reduce it,” he said.
He disclosed that he has sponsored and moved over a dozen motions on the floor of the House, addressing critical national issues. These include calls for the revitalisation of the Gele-Gele Seaport, transparency in the management of the Excess Crude Account and other oil revenues, as well as investigations into alleged irregularities in the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Other motions, he said, focused on tax compliance by government agencies and oil firms, conversion of forfeited assets for public use, regulation of subscription price increases by Multichoice, and concerns in the petroleum sector, including issues involving the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
He also cited motions advocating patronage of local textile industries by uniformed agencies, enforcement of federal housing master plans, adoption of renewable energy in MDAs, and improved accountability in the management of public assets. He further raised a matter of urgent public importance on the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) project in Benin City.
On the legislative front, Iyawe listed several bills he has sponsored, including the National Public Asset Management Agency (Establishment) Bill, National Skills Development and Empowerment Bill, Federal Universities of Technology Act (Amendment) Bill, Examination Malpractices Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, Nigerian Ports Authority Act (Amendment) Bill, and the Digital Health Services (Establishment) Bill.
Others include amendments to the Federal Medical Centres Act, the Transparency and Accountability in Public Service Bill, the Ride-Hailing and Smart Mobility Bill, and the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act.
Highlighting his constituency projects and empowerment programmes, Iyawe said he has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods in Oredo. These include a food bank programme that provided palliatives to over 4,000 constituents for 10 months, distribution of over 70 mini buses and 50 motorcycles to youths, and grants to more than 1,000 market women.
He also listed free medical outreach programmes, including eye surgeries for over 50 beneficiaries, donation of medical equipment to primary healthcare centres, and provision of 41 computers with solar power systems to New Era School.
According to him, over 1,000 streetlights have been installed across Oredo, while 100 sewing machines and makeup kits were distributed to support small businesses.
In the education sector, he cited annual sponsorship of JAMB and WAEC registration for over 1,000 students, full university scholarships for indigent students, and renovation and construction of classrooms and sanitation facilities in schools.
Other initiatives include annual cultural and quiz competitions, football tournaments for local clubs, renovation of abattoirs, and palliative support for Muslim communities.
Presenting his achievements as a “scorecard,” Iyawe assured constituents that he would build on the gains of his first term if re-elected.
“This is my report card. It is not about what I will do, but what I have done and what I will continue to do,” he said.
